Le società Thales e Nexter Systems stanno collaborando per mettere in produzione un nuovo sistema d'arma multiruolo denominato “RAPIDFireNaval”, per soddisfare i potenziali requisiti della Marina Nationale e confidano nei finanziamenti della DGA per il 2020.
Il cannone a turo rapido “RAPIDFireNaval” è costituito da una torretta telecomandata armata con il CTAI 40 mm Cased Telescoped Armament System (CTAS) stabilizzato che è stato qualificato da Francia e Regno Unito per applicazioni terrestri ed è in produzione dall'inizio del 2016.
Se ordinato, il sistema RAPIDFireNaval potrebbe essere imbarcato sulla prima nave entro il 2022.
Il CTAS da 40 mm ha una velocità di fuoco ciclica tipica fino a 200 colpi/min, sebbene una raffica tipica per neutralizzare una minaccia aerea in arrivo sarebbe inferiore a dieci colpi. La portata massima effettiva nel ruolo di difesa aerea è fino a 4.000 metri ed i bossoli vuoti verrebbero espulsi all'esterno della torretta. Se utilizzato nella modalità di fuoco diretto contro bersagli di superficie, la portata effettiva è di circa 2.500 m.
La torretta telecomandata ha 140 colpi di munizioni da 40 mm pronte all'uso, con altri 100 colpi di munizioni da 40 mm nel vano di stivaggio della struttura della torretta.
Le 10 navi pattuglia offshore (OPV) che saranno acquisite per la Marina Nationale nell'ambito del programma Patrouilleurs Océanique (PO) saranno armate con il sistema d'arma ravvicinato multiruolo navale Thales/Nexter RAPIDFire (CIWS).
Il RAPIDFire Naval CWIS è in grado di ingaggiare minacce come:
- UAV,
- elicotteri,
- caccia da attacco al suolo,
- missili da crociera,
- motovedette veloci
- e missili mare-mare.
Il programma PO è stato formalmente avviato a giugno dal Ministero delle Forze Armate francese, mentre l'attività di progettazione è attualmente svolta da Naval Group.
Il RAPIDFire Naval CIWS sviluppato da Thales e Nexter comprende:
- un supporto per cannone non penetrante dotato del CTA International 40CTAS (40 mm Cased Telescoped Ammunition System),
- un sistema di controllo del fuoco optronico,
- un caricatore di munizioni per circa 140 colpi pronti al fuoco,
- apparecchiature per il controllo delle armi
- e un sistema automatico di gestione delle munizioni.
Può funzionare sia in modalità integrata che autonoma.
L'arma girostabilizzata ha una velocità di sparo fino a 200 colpi / min con una tipica raffica contro minacce aeree fino a 10 colpi di raffica aerea anti-aerea e una portata effettiva fino a 4.000 me fino a 2.500 m contro minacce di superficie utilizzando la detonazione puntuale, esplosione d'aria e colpi sabot decalibrati stabilizzati con pinne, perforanti.
I 10 OPV entreranno in servizio tra il 2025 e il 2029. Avranno una lunghezza complessiva di circa 90 m, un dislocamento di circa 2.000 tonnellate ed avranno un equipaggio di 40 uomini.

Thales and Nexter are developing the 40 mm "CTAS RAPIDFireNaval" onboard cannon
Thales and Nexter Systems are working together to put a new multi-purpose weapons system called "RAPIDFireNaval" into production to meet the potential requirements of the National Navy and are confident of funding from the DGA for 2020.
The 'RAPIDFireNaval' fast torpedo gun consists of a remote-controlled turret armed with the 40 mm CTAI Cased Telescoped Armament System (CTAS) stabilised which has been qualified by France and the UK for land-based applications and has been in production since early 2016.
If ordered, the RAPIDFireNaval system could be on board the first ship by 2022.
The 40mm CTAS has a typical cyclic fire rate of up to 200 rounds/min, although a typical burst to neutralise an incoming air threat would be less than ten rounds. The maximum effective range in the air defence role is up to 4,000 metres and empty shells would be ejected outside the turret. When used in direct fire mode against surface targets, the effective range is approximately 2,500m.
The remote control turret has 140 rounds of 40mm ammunition ready to use, with another 100 rounds of 40mm ammunition in the storage compartment of the turret structure.
The 10 Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) to be acquired for the National Navy under the Patrouilleurs Océanique (PO) programme will be armed with the Thales / Nexter RAPIDFire (CIWS) multi-role naval close-range weapon system.

The RAPIDFire Naval CWIS is able to engage threats such as:
- UAV,
- helicopters,
- ground attack hunting,
- cruise missiles,
- fast patrol boats
- and sea-sea missiles.
The PO programme was formally launched in June by the French Ministry of the Armed Forces, while the design activity is currently carried out by Naval Group.
The RAPIDFire Naval CIWS developed by Thales and Nexter includes:
- a non-penetrating gun holder equipped with the CTA International 40CTAS (40 mm Cased Telescoped Ammunition System),
- an optronic fire control system,
- a magazine of ammunition for about 140 rounds ready to fire,
- weapons control equipment
- and an automatic ammunition management system.
It can work both in integrated and autonomous mode.
The gyrostabilised weapon has a firing speed of up to 200 rounds/min with a typical anti-air threat volley of up to 10 anti-air threat volleys and an effective range of up to 4,000 me up to 2,500 m against surface threats using point detonation, air burst and stabilised sabot shots with fins, armor-piercing.
The 10 OPVs will enter service between 2025 and 2029. They will have a total length of about 90 m, a displacement of about 2,000 tons and will have a crew of 40 men.
