Dichiarato operativo il pod di designazione laser TALIOS (Targeting Long-range Identification Optronic System)

Il Carrier Strike Group della Marine Nationale, in data 28 febbraio 2020 ha dichiarato operativo il POD “TALIOS (Targeting Long-range Identification Optronic System)” nell'ambito delle missioni di addestramento di supporto a terra e sorveglianza marittima. Questa fase sarà presto seguita dalla messa in servizio operativa della versione Rafale Marine per un'ampia gamma di operazioni aero-marittime. Il Targeting Long-range Identification Optronic System (TALIOS) è un sensore avanzato progettato per fornire l'acquisizione delle informazioni sul bersaglio ed il tracciamento di un bersaglio ostile.

Il sistema di sensori ad alta risoluzione è in grado di scansionare un'ampia area per cercare bersagli in modalità di ricognizione e successivamente passare alle modalità di acquisizione, tracciamento e successivo annientamento del target. 

Il nuovo apparato elettro-ottico è in grado di: 

• generare una mappatura 3D, 
• è dotato di intelligenza artificiale (AI) integrata per consentire il riconoscimento automatico del bersaglio e l'acquisizione del bersaglio, 
• supporta attacchi in profondità con bombe e missili a lungo raggio,
• identificazione di bersagli aria-aria, 
• supporto aereo ravvicinato (CAS) e informazioni non tradizionali, 
• sorveglianza e ricognizione.

Il TALIOS si differenzia principalmente dal vecchio pod DAMOCLES, in servizio da più di quindici anni in Marine Nationale, per: 

• l'aggiunta di una telecamera a lungo raggio visivo molto efficiente e per l'ammodernamento del sensore di banda II a infrarossi;
• L'interfaccia uomo-sistema è stata ridisegnata per presentare al pilota tutte le informazioni essenziali per comprendere una complessa situazione tattica; 
• la manutenzione della navicella è migliorata grazie all'aggiunta di una modalità "manutenzione cabina" che fornisce un rapporto diretto del suo stato a fine volo, che consente di anticiparne la manutenzione.

Il gruppo aeronavale della M.N. francese vede potenziate le sue capacità operative e ora beneficia di un sensore optronico ad alte prestazioni che sarà una risorsa durante le prossime operazioni di proiezione di potenza o controllo degli spazi aeromarittimi guidati dal gruppo di aviazione navale.

Presso la base Istres nell'ambito del programma F3R, il prototipo del POD di prova di prova ha raccolto immagini Full HD scattate utilizzando il canale "giorno" e ha offerto ottime prestazioni di puntamento e telemetria. 

Il TALIOS è progettato da Thales, ed è il primo pod di targeting optronico a coprire l'intera catena decisionale, dalla raccolta di informazioni alla neutralizzazione dell’obiettivo dichiarato ostile. Con i sensori a infrarossi ed elettro-ottici ad alta risoluzione di ultima generazione, la stabilizzazione della linea di vista e l'elaborazione delle immagini ad alte prestazioni, le sue capacità vanno dal colpo profondo con munizioni guidate di precisione, all'identificazione del bersaglio aria-aria ed al supporto ravvicinato ogni-tempo.

L'integrazione del pod TALIOS con i Rafales è una parte importante dello sviluppo del Rafale F3R. Il programma di sviluppo ha avuto inizio nel 2016, dopo il primo volo sul banco prova Mirage 2000. Lo sviluppo del pod TALIOS ed i programmi di integrazione con il caccia multi-ruolo Rafale sono effettuati in concomitanza. I test di regolazione e misurazione delle prestazioni sono proseguiti per tutto il 2017 ed hanno condotto alla qualificazione dell'attrezzatura con la qualificazione dello standard F3R per il Rafale nel 2018.E’ previsto un ordine di 45 pod per l’Armeé de l’Air e la Marine Nationale, 20 dei quali sono già stati ordinati a Thales dalla French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA). La consegna delle attrezzature prodotte in serie è iniziata nel 2018.

Il Talios è un pod di designazione laser di nuova generazione (PDL-NG) che è un’evoluzione del pod Damocle attualmente in servizio nei teatri operativi. Il Talios può rilevare e identificare i bersagli a terra, ma anche attaccarli con grande precisione. Con la sua architettura aperta, il pod TALIOS è progettato come un sistema “plug & fight” per tutti i jet da combattimento attuali e futuri. Funzioni aggiuntive possono essere incorporate come e quando saranno necessarie per soddisfare le esigenze sempre in evoluzione. Questo nuovo pod equipaggerà gradualmente tutti i gruppi di volo su Rafale dell’Aeronautica Militare Francese e sarà schierato nei teatri operativi. Il pod Talios è perfettamente adatto agli attuali impegni a beneficio delle operazioni Chammal in Medio Oriente/Levante e Barkhane nella striscia Sahelo-Sahariana ed è particolarmente adatto per missioni di supporto al fuoco (CAS – Close Air Support) o di ricognizione armata (SCAR – Strike Coordination and Reconnaissance).

La risoluzione e le sovrapposizioni di informazioni tattiche aggiuntive consentono una migliore interpretazione dell’immagine e ne facilitano l’utilizzo (ricerca, identificazione, inseguimento e designazione dei target) e quindi il successivo processo decisionale.

Il sistema di supporto manutentivo del pod include la soluzione di manutenzione predittiva progettata per prevenire guasti alle apparecchiature che potrebbero interrompere una missione operativa e diminuire la disponibilità operativa.

Gli sviluppi in corso del sistema includono una funzione ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) avanzata che incorpora nuove modalità di ricognizione e algoritmi avanzati di rilevamento del bersaglio e riconoscimento automatico. Altre nuove funzioni includono immagini a colori ad alta definizione e la funzione Vision Permanent del pod, che sovrapporrà immagini in tempo reale su una mappa 3D dell’ambiente operativo

Il sistema beneficia della precisione del suo sistema di geolocalizzazione, di un’interfaccia uomo-sistema moderna e migliorata e quindi di una funzionalità Rover integrata, che consente lo scambio di immagini con le truppe a terra. Dispone inoltre di funzionalità di manutenzione integrate che ne faciliteranno il supporto e un notevole potenziale di sviluppo.

TALIOS (Targeting Long-range Identification Optronic System) laser designation pod declared operational

On 28 February 2020, the Carrier Strike Group of Marine Nationale declared the POD "TALIOS (Targeting Long-range Identification Optronic System)" operational as part of ground support training and maritime surveillance missions. This phase will soon be followed by the operational commissioning of the Rafale Marine version for a wide range of air and sea operations. The Targeting Long-range Identification Optronic System (TALIOS) is an advanced sensor designed to provide target information acquisition and tracking of a hostile target.

The high-resolution sensor system is capable of scanning a wide area to search for targets in reconnaissance mode and then switch to acquisition, tracking and subsequent target annihilation modes. 

The new electro-optical apparatus is capable of: 

• generate 3D mapping, 
• is equipped with integrated artificial intelligence (AI) to allow automatic target recognition and target acquisition, 
• supports deep attacks with bombs and long-range missiles,
• identification of air-to-air targets, 
• close aerial support (CAS) and non-traditional information, 
• surveillance and reconnaissance.

The TALIOS differs mainly from the old pod DAMOCLES, in service for more than fifteen years in Marine Nationale, for: 

• the addition of a very efficient long-range camera and the modernisation of the infrared band II sensor;
• The man-system interface has been redesigned to present the pilot with all the essential information to understand a complex tactical situation; 
• the maintenance of the spacecraft has been improved by the addition of a "cabin maintenance" mode that provides a direct report of its status at the end of the flight, which makes it possible to anticipate its maintenance.

The French M.N. aeronaval group sees its operational capabilities enhanced and now benefits from a high-performance optronic sensor that will be an asset during the forthcoming operations of power projection or control of aerospace spaces led by the naval aviation group.

At the Istres base as part of the F3R programme, the test POD prototype collected Full HD images taken using the "day" channel and offered excellent targeting and telemetry performance. 

The TALIOS is designed by Thales, and is the first optronic targeting pod to cover the entire decision making chain, from gathering information to neutralising the declared hostile target. With the latest generation of high-resolution infrared and electro-optical sensors, line of sight stabilisation and high-performance image processing, its capabilities range from deep shot with precision guided ammunition to air-to-air target identification and close-range support every time.

The integration of the TALIOS pod with the Rafales is an important part of the development of the Rafale F3R. The development programme started in 2016, after the first flight on the Mirage 2000 test bench. The development of the TALIOS pod and the integration programmes with the Rafale multi-role fighter aircraft are carried out at the same time. Tests for adjustment and performance measurement continued throughout 2017 and led to the qualification of the equipment with the F3R standard for the Rafale in 2018. 45 pods are planned for the Armeé de l'Air and Marine Nationale, 20 of which have already been ordered in Thales by the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA). The delivery of the mass produced equipment started in 2018.

The Talios is a new generation laser designation pod (PDL-NG) which is an evolution of the Damocles pod currently in service in operating theatres. The Talios can detect and identify targets on the ground, but also attack them with great accuracy. With its open architecture, the TALIOS pod is designed as a "plug & fight" system for all current and future fighter jets. Additional functions can be incorporated as and when they are needed to meet changing needs. 

This new pod will gradually equip all flight groups on Rafale of the French Air Force and will be deployed in the operating theatres. The Talios pod is perfectly suited to the current commitments for the benefit of Chammal operations in the Middle East / Levante and Barkhane in the Sahelo-Saharan strip and is particularly suitable for fire support (CAS - Close Air Support) or armed reconnaissance (SCAR - Strike Coordination and Reconnaissance) missions.

The resolution and the overlapping of additional tactical information allow a better interpretation of the image and facilitate its use (search, identification, tracking and designation of targets) and thus the subsequent decision making process.

The pod's maintenance support system includes the predictive maintenance solution designed to prevent equipment failures that could interrupt an operational mission and decrease operational availability.

Ongoing system developments include an advanced Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (ISR) function that incorporates new reconnaissance modes and advanced target detection and automatic recognition algorithms. Other new features include high-definition colour images and the pod's Vision Permanent function, which will overlay real-time images on a 3D map of the operating environment.

The system benefits from the precision of its geolocation system, a modern and improved man-system interface and therefore an integrated Rover functionality, which allows the exchange of images with the troops on the ground. It also has integrated maintenance capabilities that will facilitate support and considerable development potential.
